Pignut 4
My patterdale bitch had her first season, she was abit hormonal but fine in herself. She seemed to have a large bottom for a while (longer than I remember my other bitch having) but it receded eventually. She was also very horny and walking backwards into my mystified castrated lurcher! I have noticed recently (a few weeks later, and one week before she is due to be spayed) that she is licking her bottom alot, she is very quiet, taking herself off to lie on the kids beds or sitting on the settee with all the cushions around her, and has put on weight and has very noticeable tits which are producing milk. She is off her food too. She has not, to my knowledge, been near an entire dog, but I suppose anything is possible - she can get out the cat flap at night and go a-wandering - nearest dog is 2 miles away! I do not think she does this as she does not look like a dog that wandered 2 miles in the hill at night (wet, grubby, covered in everything). Like I said, she is due to be spayed Tuesday week. I suppose I should cancel that and wait until she has finished being "pregnant". Also, should I get her checked for any puppies? I am hoping that she is not pregnant because she is a wee little girl and there are only big collies about here! Any thoughts? Pignut Quote Link to post

Dawn B 212
Could well be a phantom Pignut, but if it is you will need to hold off with the spaying untill its over. Does she have a discharge and is she drinking more water than normal? dawn. Quote Link to post
Pignut 4
No, I have noticed extra drinking. She is always licking her bottom in the last 24 hours and the tits are quite pronounced now! I am sure she is not pregnant. She has not been wandering - she doesn't. She just doesn't. I think it is a phantom pregnancy. She can get into the garden and has to climb over a fence to get really out. The other dog can't get out so she would not go on her own. Surely there would be dogs calling at the house if there were any around. I live in the middle of nowhere, real nowhere. I promise. I will be going to the vet tomorrow and I know he will say it is a phantom pregnancy. I have asked my business partner and she can't remember any dogs on the premises either -we work from my home and all the dogs are with us all the time. My dogs have as much freedom as they need - the garden is big, they are with me and not straying ever. I would know. This is a place where dogs are shot if roaming and I have never heard from my neighbours that they see my dogs out and about. F Quote Link to post
Dawn B 212
I was just thinking of a possible Pyometra, one of a dogs true medical emergencies. Symptoms time wise would fit in with the season etc.. other symptoms incluse a browny discharge which you may not see if she is licking herself, upend her when she has been still a while and look then, use a white tissue (graphic eh!) and also excessive drinking. If you even think she may have a Pyo, I would at least speak to a Vet tonight, my bitch had a closed Pyo, the worst type and I was told she was within 12hrs of dying. I dont want to alarm you but feel I ought to point it out. dawn. Quote Link to post
Pignut 4
Thanks Dawn - I really appreciate your input. I will up-end and see what like. Poor wee thing. She is not her usual bouncy little self. Pignut Quote Link to post
