A target session and 2 birds

Recommended Posts

At last some decent weather up here! I have ben waiting for days for the wind and rain to stop so I could get out and zero my new rifle, Swiss Arms SHR970 in .223.

It was a great early morning drive, the 1st frost of the year in the valley and blazing sunshine too, lovely.

Set a target out at 100yds and put a few rounds down, trying Remington Accutips and Winchester Silver tips in 55gr and Remington Accutips in 50gr boat tail.

Tightest groups were with the Remmy 55gr.

I put a couple of boxes through, cleaned and only had 2 rounds spare.

Now those who have read my posts about the damn crows and rooks on this farm will know that as soon as they see me coming they are gone in a flash. I spotted a couple of birds glide silentyl in to the field next to where I was zeroing, so Off I went like 'Elma' on a quick but stealthy run across the field to a nice high wall which hid me very well.

I slowly raised the muzzle over the wall as slowly as I could and trid to keep the silhouette as low as possible, next I did the same with my head all the time spying 2 birds ambling by a sheep feeded. My cheek found the stock and I slowly scoped round to the closest bird at about 70yds, it sensed something and did 2 quick hops before taking flight for a circle around the trees.

His mate however was stood in the shadow of the sheep feeder looking right at me at about 90yds, a quick cross hairs on ribcage and it was all over. At last 1 nil to the SHR970.

Now I only had 1 round left. So I decided to jump in my van and take a drive, I spotted 2 rooks in the file on my right, so I killed the engine and pulled up sharpish, bith my front windows were allready down so I reached across to the passenger seat and picked up my LRF and a quick ping of both birds came back as 220yds for the one on the left and 175yds for the one on the right.

Now the one on the right was waddling away from me and the distance was building as I reached over for the rifle. I wound 3/4MOA on the elevation and resting the stock on the wing mirror I placed the cross hairs on the top of the rooks head as it was now a bit more than 175yds away, that way I would hopefully not miss underneath the bird.

Click, Boom, Thwack! I watched it through the scope for about 3 seconds as the Rook made an effort to fly that didnt get it off the ground.

Another big bird and on closer examination I had shot it right on the centreline but just below the rib cage about 6" below my point of aim, so a fair bit further than the original 175yds when I first pinged it with the LRF.

So 2 rounds, 2 shots and 2 less pest on the farm. Happy days.

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come and I will get more of these with the rifle, because that bloody ladder trap still hasnt worked!
