Help & much needed advice regarding what lurcher pup to get....

Recommended Posts

Have you had any sort of dog before? Or will you be a completely new dog owner? What sort of person are you? Do you want to live heart in mouth watching your dog run? Or would you rather live more comfortably, easy going, without the terrifying and exhilarating rush of a full-on kami=kaze type dog? Are you patient, laid back and steady, or are you the opposite? It would be a good idea to try and get out and see different types of dog working before you make a decision.

Also, what sort of ground will you be running the dog on? Grassland? Moors? Arable? (plough, drilling) Clay land or softer? All these things can have a bearing on what might be the best type of dog for you. Very fast dogs stand more chance of injuring themselves on rough/bad ground. Most fast dogs hit the ground harder than slower dogs, so not good on stony or rough land. But a steady old plodder won't catch you as many rabbits if the rabbits are turbo charged running on hard fast ground.

If you have had other breeds before, remember that any sort of lurcher not only runs faster, but reacts faster, mentally as well as physically. They all need proper training: livestock, basic obedience. Some types of lurcher need a lot more training before you can trust them with livestock: Saluki types being a good example.

Personally, I'd recommend a good lurcher to lurcher line from dogs which are working in the way you like, but failing that, something like a Bedlington/Grey: good natured, more forgiving of first time owner errors in training than a Collie cross which can be very over sensitive. Just my opinion.
