dogs and quarry 40
First night out on the lamp last night with me dog being in pup and ferrets too young to work (well timed I know) me uncle took me out for a shine with the rifles for a few hours. Don't shoot rifles much myself, do more with the shotgun, dogs or ferrets, but had a good night. Started off about a stubble field, quick shine and spotted 4 eyes and long ears. One took off with no stopping but the other stayed put. First one in the bag with a head shot. Took off to the next part of our permission, seeing a couple of fallow deer on the way, mother and calf, always nice to see. Next field was a rabbit at yards, got a steady rest, took a breath, and squeezed. 'Good heart shot' whispered my uncle, think I'll remember that shot for a good while. Three more rabbits followed over a few more field with the third producing a fox from out of the hedges. Time for my uncle to try out his new squeaking call with a speaker, handy bit of kit with 4 different calls. Charlie was cautious though and reluctant to leave the hiding spot close to the hedge for a good 10-15 minutes. He then turned and took off into the next field, we slowly followed where there were three more rabbits sitting way out. got the .22 ready when Charlie showed himself again, put the .22 away and took the lamp from my uncle to get his larger calibre rifle ready, the fox was still very cautious, came within 100 yards after calling him in slowly, however with every shine he took a dash in the other direction. Finally he stopped, it was a good distance but my uncle had him in his sights. Boff and down went Charlie, mixed bag to end the night, chuffed to bits. Quote Link to post
