Lab - If numbers are better, how bout this? Man one goes out on a weekend one day and takes 30 in a day. Man two goes out seven days that week for an hour a time and ends the week on 40. You need to work it out over the season, not by the highest number taken in a day, and work out for many are bolted to how many bagged, as any idiot can get high numbers on land that is over run.

 

The One - depends what the work mate wants, if he just wants a rabbit 'sometime', or for his dinner tomorrow, you do whats needed i guess.

 

But as i said, you can't catch what's not there, some land we do, we might mooch about and take a dozen in a day, some land you take 20/30 in a few hours.

 

For me it's about the whole package and how much you miss, i.e i have been out only an hour or so a day for the last week and a bit and only had one longer 'day' on some land where there are no huge amounts anyway. But of the 48 found to ground, 46 have been taken, with only two missed due to slipping nets that didn't purse right and the dog not managing to reel them back in.

 

I'd personally say that's more impressive than taking 30 in a day from land that holds a high number and missing another 10, or something.

I never said in a day mate and i agree you can only look at it over a season. I sort of used my grandad as a rule when i posted my last post. He came out the army and rented ground all over the place. He laid snares and ferreted and he made a mans weekly wage in 2 days at the rabbits..(so he told me, ki have no reason to disbelieve him). He was great at what he done and people told me that he learned them how to do it properly and how to be able to catch numbers.

Yes maybe any idiot can go shooting them with a rifle but snaring and ferreting does contain a certain skill to catch and catch well....

Remember i looked at this as a financial view.....if its plain and simple for sport/hobby then neither is better..........

 

Ah right, i see what you are saying now, i thought the option was between someone taking bigger bags less regular, or smaller bags regular. In this case there is little difference imo.

 

To be honest, these days there is no real money in bunnys, so it's not about finances (where as it used to be very much so, as you say).

 

What i meant by, 'any idiot;, was just that in certain land, where there are very high numbers of rabbits, you will find a lot to ground, and as long as you can sort of lay nets, and have ferrets that will work to some extent, then a decent bag is easy enough to achieve. Someone may take 30 bunnies in a day, but maybe they have lost the same again through missed holes, badly set nets, and ferrets leaving them down there.

 

Whereas in an area with less rabbits, and less easy to find warrens etc, then a man who only catches 15/20 rabbits, but misses none that he bolts and bolt all that he finds, is, in my opinion a better ferreter, with a better working team (ferrets/dogs).

 

In theory, the second man, could visit the first mans land and maybe take 60 or more, where the first would only take 30.

 

If the 1st man visited the 2nd mans land, he may only take 5 of the 15/20 bolted.

 

Does that make sense? I think the only fair way to judge the 'better' ferreter is his success of equivilant land with equivilant numbers, and his ratio of rabbits on the land/found/bolted and what he takes home.

It makes complete sense mate. Theres a guy that used to get pheasants from us, dont think he is alive anymore and everytime he came up for birds he told the same story where he was a youngster out ferreting a few holes 1 day when my grandad walked past with the ferrets on his way to his permission. They said there 'mornings' and after my grandads few hours of ferreting, rabbits in the bags he passed by the guy and asked how he was getting on....? He had 2/3 rabbits..... So my grandad took the guy to a wee dyke he knew off and in the ferrets went and in no time he had his quota for his order....
