koda 83
There isnt a breed of dog, or a dog that has shortcomings as well as virtues..try to always focus on virtues, the positives, never the negatives..ANYONE can pick faults, and this is indicated by the experts standing around the lurcher and terrier show rings in the summer months. Focus on this guys dogs good points, and there are many, even if some of you are blinded by what ever reasons, or are just over ice-ening the cake you are trying to bake. When I was involved with brreding a few litters, our aim was to produce quality dogs, as free from shortcomings as possbile, and just as importantly, consistantly to give me an endless supply of dogs that could do what I needed them to do...Even with our breed of deerhounds, this ethos did improve our stock over the time we had them, not 100% success, but success never the less. If a breeder produces 1 outstanding dog and the rest are duds this in itself is some form of achievement, over a few generations if the same breeder produces 3 outstanding dogs, 4 are mediocre and 1 dud, there has definately been an improvement, to get all outstanding dogs is a breeders dream, but in reality it rarely happens. Then we have environmental factors, as well as many other factors that can effect wether or not this dog we have is to make the grade..Everyone thinks that because they have a dog, they are dogmen (or woman) this of course is not true..people who get a pup from a litter and it turns out to be rubbish, while the majority of pups from the litter are making the grade, should have a real hard look at themselves first before condeming the breed as a whole. A good dogman can make a mediocre dog good in a lot of cases, but a poor dogman can spoil even the best stock. We all get show leeks from the same breeder, but later when there grow and are on the show bench, some are bigger and better than others, but, they were all from the same breed, has some fecker waved a magic wand? no, someone has took a bit more care and put a bit more time and effort into them. Some of my biggest regrets when we were breeding was to allow part timers to have dogs from me, especially from my lurchers, they lock them up in a kennel for 9 months, take them out spoil them completely then blame the breeder or the breed. It dosnt jump, it dosnt carry back, it jumps its toes all the time..wake up for fucks sake, its a f*****g dog not a f*****g car.. Dave Platt is producing some cracking dogs, but not all of them he produces will be world beaters, he dosnt profess they will be either..but in this day and age do lurchermen want world beaters.. He has done his homework, obtained some good breeding stock, (the first rule in good stock breeding) he produces pups, rearers them to good standards, sells them and guess what fellas, now comes the next important bit, the person that gets them has to do the rest, if a pup dosnt jump its not Daves fault, if it doesnt carry its not Daves fault..Put the effort in and they may well be on the top table, dont put the effort in and they maybe thrown out with the rest of the rubbish.. Never had a Dave Platt dog myself, but if I did want one I certainly wouldnt come to a site that is predominantly bull cross and saluki cross orientated for accurate information and that was traditionally anti deerhound cross, until quite recently.. Absolutely bang on there's more bad owners than there is bad dogs :yes:these dogs need time thats what is lacking with people 1 Quote Link to post

Lost Generation 93
Good article by Dave Sleight about Dave Platts in this month's EDRD. Like Mr Sleight I have a lot of respect for Dave Platts. I have blood from his deerhounds in the bitches I am running now and have seen several Platts bred dogs do very well. Dave Sleight also has some choice words for the knockers, whiners, arm-chair experts and internet warriors who infest this forum and seem to get off on slagging-off people like Dave Platts who have spent their lives doing their best to breed decent dogs.
