All my dogs are perfectly good with pigeons, they'll walk around the garden fine without touching them but they still don't touch feather when in the field. Reason I write this is that I was just up the field and a pheasant jumped up yards infront of my bull crossand he didn't even attempt to grab it but turnt and walked back to me. Is there a way of having it so my dogs are still good around the racers but peg the odd pheasant or woody etc.

Chances are mate, if you've trained them to keep off your pigeons, they won't nail them in the field, don't tell the dog off for not chasing birds, it's only doing what you want it to do, anyway mate, I wouldn't lose sleep over it, aslong as its game for the quarry you want it for then jobs a goodin.. To be honest I'd prefer a dog that didn't go for feather if I kept pigeons myself, otherwise you could end up losing a few, Atb Dan.

dogs can learn to take flighted prey and at the same time leave domestic fowl alone, the problem with pheasant and such is they dont really trigger drive in a dog unless encouraged, many dogs will give chase but alot of time its nothing like the intensity of real quarry in the dogs eyes,if you encourage it , it will get better,

,The rippling effect of body movement in quarry ,rat , rabbit, fox , is a major trigger for the mutt, like water flowing from a hose pipe ,sents the f**kin terrier ballistic, birds have a very different style, but any motion will get a dogs attention, how high the level of intensity is , is usually down to the movement thereafter,

,in saying that had a greyhound years ago who could take magpies out of the yard when they were picking round her scraps of bone , she'd lie very still till the bird was over close enough, make her move and go straight up into the air after it , caught f**k all else though, laugh.gif
