Training

Protein, creatine and a pre workout supplement gives them the edge over other ferrets. Also try a few mma classes. Some things can be useful if the rabbit gets wide, your ferret can throw them in a sleeper hold until you dig down

Get some old piping such as drainag or gas pipe lay it out in your garden n get em running through it get them used to your feet and being picked up once they come out you could even reward them for this as it should prevent skulkin as theres nothing worse.start them on small buries and let them get used to the nets being there,to start with they may play around the entrance to the bury but dont worry they should go down instinctively then its just building their expierience.most ferrets will bolt rabbits but you could be lucky and with time end up with a real grafter that wont leave a bury till its empty hope this helps as im only going by one of the ways i was told to go about it when i started out.

Hi,I'm new to the sport and am looking to train my two, one year old jills to work, I was wondering if anybody has any advice on how to go about it.

Cheers

Callum

Hello Callum, as Obby says they don't need to be trained as such, it might be worth taking them to a small bury that you know is unoccupied to get them used to being picked up from the entrance etc. Once they get the hang of it you'll find that they are usually quite keen to enter a warren and seem to enjoy the experience. Obviously some work better than others but I've never had a ferret that refused to enter a bury in 20 years. Some develope a habbit of laying up with a kill which can be a pain in the arse, but you have to take the rough with the smooth and enjoy the sport.

Just to add i also find it helps to handle them lots, so they are used to it, have them running about your feet, so they are used to that, and being picked up and put down. Get them running through pipes and picking them up from the ends so they are used to that as well. I like to do a certain call when feeding so that often you can call the ferret to you. Also when first working them, i do it in a small warren, and when the first rabbit hits the nets, i kill it and leave it by the whole twitching so they come out and get a rag of it as a reward, makes them keen i think. Also sometimes run them down behind an experianced ferret. Also get them used to dogs.
