Ideation 8,217
First thing is, tinned dog food is not so good for ferrets. They are obligate carnivores and have very short digestive tracts. They need a high protein diet, where the protein is meat derived. Best thing you can feed them is a fresh meat, whole carcass diet. Or, a high quality dried FERRET food. And plenty of fresh water. Odd egg and bit of goat milk is an ok treat. Dog and cat food i wouldnt touch. Especially tinned. Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,217
There are a range of dried foods mate, i use James Well beloved, just cos thats what i tried first, also used Vitalin and Alpha, both good. Cheapest way is to order a 20 kg sack online, works out a lot lot cheaper. Shouldnt be too much of a problem changing food. You can also supplement with any meat, such as cheap chicken wings etc. I feed rabbit, but do so over night, chuck in one at night, remove skin and bones in morn. Aye tinned food would be pretty expensive ad its crap. Quote Link to post

I avoid pork products as they usually have a lot of added salt, but from a slaughterhouse your probably fine. Any poultry is great. Mine get rabbit , pheasant, chicken, venison, tree rat, fish, bit of lamb, beef etc. What you getting from the slaughter house? Quote Link to post
superfurryanimal 91
get down to your local butchers for scraps and off cuts, fresh raw meat all the way and don't forget to keep your eye out for fresh road kill, if you do run short of raw and feed dry don't forget to make sure they have more water than they need has they will dehydrate very quickly on dry food a.t.b sfa Quote Link to post
Elmer Fudd 2011 39
try lights from a butchers and it can free and they love it with dry food as a back up Edited July 7, 2011 by Elmer Fudd 2011 Quote Link to post
ferretmaniac 5
Wellbeloved ferret biscuits is all you need and if you feel you want to add abit more nutrients i used to use the ferret paste once a day on top of the biscuits - they love it. Tinned food isnt a good diet for them - its alright for one off (if you have run out of the normal feed for a few days) but even then i'd try and save abit of rabit for them freeze it and its a good source of protien. ATB - but keep away from the tinned food lol!! Quote Link to post
