free floating barrel

Recommended Posts

Have a Howa 1500 in .223 cal, it is fitted with a walnut stock, did the test with a piece of paper between barrel and stock recess and there is no clearance at all :icon_redface: Will this effect the point of impact when the barrel warms up?? Do you think it is worth getting this fixed and if so is it something i can do myself.

i do struggle to get consistent results when at the range, any ideas please...

Thanks

The Howa is normally fully floating. What stock do you have? Floating the barrel is pretty easy to do with a piece of copper pipe and some sand paper, just go a little bit at a time and you'll be fine.

Hi Matt,Got the rifle second hand from the Sportsman newport, the stock is a nice piece of wood but i am not sure if its original!! My mate has a Howa with synthetic stock and this has about 2mm of clearance full length of barrel

I will have a go with sand paper this week. How much clearance do you think would be acceptable ?

Cheers

i would want to be able to slide a piece of a4 paper up it if not a bit thicker. as when your on a bipod the weight of the rifle can push down on the stock a bit. alos with heat and then cold the stock will expand a little anyway. so make sure you have enough gap.

like the guy above said. do a little at a time. and dont forget to re seal the stock when you have finished. as you dont want wet and damp getting into the wood. this will make it swell else.
