Kay 3,709
Can anyone tell me if my ferret eats a slug that has been poisioned by slug pellets, can it make my ferret sick or kill it, or does the poision kill the slug quickly
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Slug Pellets are a f*cking abomination and it's a disgrace people can yet get hold of the bloody things. Enviromental disaster waiting to happen ~ sadly, it all too often does too! Has this happened, or are ye planning on using them?

No i have no flowers but i read a post on another forum and this woman said her ferrets eat slugs that get in the run of her ferret court, so i was wondering if a slug had been poisioned if it could kill or make a ferret sick who ate one

Guest Ditch_Shitter
Kill them dead as door nails! On the up side; Ferrets tend not to eat slugs. Slugs that eat pellets don't get far. If said woman's having other problems with slugs, other methods of keeping them at bay are preferable (Anything's preferable!) to Slug Pellets. eBay 'Beer Traps' dotted about the place would help. To keep them away from the Court ~ or any other vulnerable place ~ a simple enouth moat of plastic rain guttering, sunk to ground level and covered with a board. Just keep it topped up with water and add salt. Other things to do are look to Harbourages. Neglected compost heaps are a bugger for them. General good house keeping is the best detterrant to slugs. That and hedgehogs, of course. But, as said; I very much doubt a fed ferret would bother with a poisoned or otherwise slug. Trouble is, other creatures do. And they die. Guest peakhound
Beer traps do work - I tried them in the resident's garden at work. They didn't get all the slugs, but quite a good "bag". You can even have a bit of fun while you're at it, number the traps and and run a book on which trap catches the most slugs, on the other hand some of you may have a life.....
FPO 0
can vouch for the slug beer traps, only trouble is you by even cheap beer and you have to fight someone to stop them drinking it! . Out of interest, what is the best way to get rid of the then dead drunk slugs? will birds eat them and if so get drunk? or will they just not eat them?
Guest Ditch_Shitter
FPO: Just turn a spadefull and bury the worthless b*stards. Put back some of what they take out. Pelleted ones need burning.
Guest Macnas
Metaldehyde, thats the active in slug pellets, is a nasty poison to all animals and birds, never mind slugs and snails.

Guest Ditch_Shitter
Decades back, after spending many years and no a little money on trying to track down a living example of the Henbane plant (Hyociamus niger) I actually found a source of their seeds. The plant throws a Biannual growth. First year all ye get is a little rossette of leaves. Second it springs into a four foot tall, hairy, sticky, badly smelling monster. I bought my coveted seeds and planted them. Oh the joy when, sure enough, I found myself rewarded with a little group of tiny, green rossettes. Within 48 hours molluscs turned up and ate the lot down to their tiny, thread like roots! I was vexed. I went out and bought me a tub of poisoned bran. I then quartered ever last inch of my garden and spent a long time finding each individual snail and slug and hand feeding the b*stards some breakfast. Then I knelt there and watched, in glee, as they squirmed, choked and spewed their own bubbling guts out. Then I collected everything up and burned the f*cking lot. Get mine, while ye there, Balds? Kay 3,709
I have given up trying to grow anything in the garden apart from shrubs, i have wasted hundreds of pounds on bedding plants over the yrs just to brighten the place up a bit in the spring/summer, no matter what i plant in, the slugs & snails eat them. I planted a selection of herbs & all that survived was a small patch of mint & some cloves, i did have a bit more sucess when i planted the stufff in lengths of plastic underground pipeing, i just stood it up on end & shoved it in the ground to secure it & filled it with compost & planted the herbs & put a bit of gravel in the top. I love sweet peas & do a tub full every year but the bloody green fly are a nightmare, i have sprayed washing up liquid & water on them , but as i like to cut them & put them in a little vase i spend ages picking off the green fly, i got a 10p ardening book from the library last week so i am going to grow some spuds , hope they dont get eaten by some pest or other
