stevethefish 80
We dont intentionally use ferrets for ratting, unavoidable sometimes when ferreting the side of a maize strip, the ferrets are generally ok one on one but can suffer some damage. They can loose eyes, nasty gashes and even get killed never mind what others say, best use the smoker and terriers or spades and clubs. The rats have a nasty bite, the teeth actually scizzor when they bite causing nasty cuts (scars to prove) plus some are carriers of weils disease, just be carefull. Rats dont scare me at all we used to ferret them and catch them by hand years ago for the dogs. The idea of rats being dirty animals is incorrect, they are one of the cleanest wild animals going but just have the bad press syndrome, they reckon tame rats are the best small pets going, each to their own I suppose. My opinion is rats are good for terriers, air guns, and a bit of sport, just watch your fingers cause they friggin hurt when they bite. Quote Link to post
lurcherterrierferret 2
Hi I'd never put my ferrets to rats, use smoker and terriers. I was ratting on Saturday, smoked out the does and dug out 4 nests all full of day old babies, 10 - 12 in each nest, not even got their eyes open yet, the rats bite the dog if they dont kill them quickly so you can imagine what they'd do to the ferret. I also caught one in the live trap a couple of years ago, put the end of the air rifle in to shoot it and it bit the end! They are nasty sh*tes when cornered or protecting young. Quote Link to post
kevin from bristol 95
right ive done a fair bit of ratting with ferrets and its a very hard sport the only bolters you will get are young uns when your ferret comes across an older female then its got its work cut of the rats are not afraid of a ferret what so ever and will fight to the death ive seen some major injurys through this work to ferrets and every dig made was to a large female and normally a battered ferret be very carefull ,if i were you id make up a smoker and get the dogs to sort it out ,in the past i did alot of ratting with ferrets but i wouldnt bother now as i know the damage and trust me you will be looking for new ferrets in no time Edited February 28, 2011 by kevin from bristol Quote Link to post
