jmilam08 193
Was walkin a new bit of permission Last night after a few hours ferreting, decided to take the rifles of into the woods. We hadn't seen nothing flying intothem but the other treeline we couldn't see due to it dropping down hill was wher had a feeling we might find something. About 5 minits of walking downhill I look up to see the outline of about 6 woodpigeon,to me this was a rare sight but as we kept walking and took a few shots it turnt out that this little set of woods mist hold pretty much all the bird life in our area, ther was outlines of woodys on every branch and waht sounded like hundreds lifting on every cracked branch as we got deeper and a bit further away from te woodys we disturbed a load of magpies from the trees. Took two shots and dropped one but the night ended with me walking away for two reasons, the r-10 magazine is being a complete bollack ache and no indexing every other shot and to top it off I fell down hill and hit the but of the gun hard on the floor. Iv asked this before on another post but I'm just after some of the regulars on here's opinion,1)how would you approach shooting this area2)how often would you return to spot. Iv got my ideas of what I'm gana do but never ha this opertunity and no doubt some of you have. Cheers jake Edited February 1, 2011 by jmilam08 Quote Link to post
scrutchy 5
wait for them to roost just before dark that is your best bet atb mark Quote Link to post
StevoSmith 147
Yeah like scrutchy said hide up about 4pm before they roost........as they come in pick em off but once they start comming in,in numbers be a little more restrained......woodys are very flighty as you know and a good spook could make them leave roost alltogether and move to another......I have a roost on one of my permissions that has 150-200 birds in one roost but if you leave it late and take 3-4 shots they move on to another roost and nights shooting is over......just spend some time looking at thier habits and im sure you will end up with a nice pie/pot for lunch.......i wont take more than 5-6 from a roost as the disturbance could make em leave for another roost Quote Link to post
jmilam08 193
That's what I ws thinking about the waiting for them to roost,I'm not in it for as many as i can get but would prefer to go a couple of shots a night and try and keep a nice steady bit of sport there.and a steady supply of fresh pigeon pie. Will have to sort the indexing on the r10 mag tho it's getin to be a pain. Quote Link to post

Outstanding mate.....if you want just enough for a pie then 3-4 birds a night is ideal and you could get them as the birds start comming into the roost before the majority head in......that way you can keep em sweet so to speak .........there is a post from week or two ago about the indexing mag mate have a scout and im sure you will sort it good luck with the pie hunt mate Edited February 1, 2011 by StevoSmith Quote Link to post
