How much Barf to give terrier daily?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

this week i have started introducing BARF into my terriers diet and will gradually get him on a pure BARF diet,

at the moment in total he is on around 300g of food a day, he weighs in at around 6.5Kgs, i was wondering would he need more, less or the same amount of food on a raw diet? and if anyone knows of any tables or equations etc i could use to calculate a rough guideline, as i will apply it to the other dogs once they switch over to the diet as well,

Oh and he has 2 long walks/runs a day with a couple of mooches for rabbits etc every week, so not worked hard but does cover alot of miles lol

Thanks Jord

I would start on the same weight split into 2 meals, morn n eve. And keep an eye on how the dog looks and moves...thing about calculations is that they dont take into account a dogs metabolic rate, exercise regime etc. I check my dogs ribs on a regular basis, if they feel too skinny I up the food which is usually over winter when they burning more calories and if there is abit of 'excess' covering I cut the food down, usually in hot weather when they not running bout so much.

Regards

Tina

Thanks tina,

the calculation idea was sort of a guideline which i would then add or take away from depending on how he fares, i generally go by if the dog is standing relaxed you shouldnt be able to see the ribs but you should be able to feel them

Roughly judging, i do it by eye rather than weight. Mine get about a man's fist worth in the bowl once per day. Then watch your dog for adjustments needed. When feeding barf you will be amazed how little the dog actually needs (poo's less also) Remember to vary the diet, some meat like rabbit for example does not have enough of everything it needs.

Feel but not see the ribs, but i like to see a terrier have a waist and tucked up tummy.

I also like to see my dogs with a decent waist and neat tucked stomach dont want it looking like a barrel with legs like alot of terriers you see walking around lol
