.Joe 0
Well after a days pheasant shooting yesterday, of which i drew the duff peg and saw 3 birds all day... my good fowling friend and i decided we'd have a go at the duck where we are more happy! An early alarm had me up to realise i have conjunctivitus and both my eyes were stuck shut. Half 5 came and i was loading the van up and heading out to collect my mate from his place at quarter to 6. Well it was a 4.9 at 8.30am so we knew the duck would be following it in to feed. We couldnt have been more wrong, and right at the same time! After a 10 minute walk we were in our favourite spot, after my friend had tripped and disappeared up to his neck! This spot always produces, from teal, wigeon, pintail, gadwall and mallard. Well today, in the distance we could hear the canadas! They had come back, the first time since the beginning of the season. Now this is my first season fowling so i was hoping they'd come over me...their calls went out into the distance and growing fainter. We were too late. Once the light really broke we could see the 400 or so wigeon that were in flight a few hundred yards out. At this point we had to move due to the tide and as we were the only ones on the marsh we set up about 100yrds further down the sea wall. No sooner had we sat down but the Canadas reappeard and flew right over our previous spot at about 15ft up, 2 skeins totalling around 50 geese! We were gutted. Still, the wigeon were calling back and it was starting to look up, but not for long. All they wanted to do was get up in the wind and fly. They rose higher and higher. Very few were interested in the decoys and those that were looking, werent in range, regardless of calling. We decided enough was enough, my waders had developed a hole in the crotch and it was rather cold so we packed up and walked in... as i should have expected the Canadas once again appeared right over our heads, all we could do was stand and watch. At least they'll use that line again because they didnt hear a shot. All in all it was a great morning, we saw everything we wanted and more, just a shame nothing came of it. We're back out tonight so we'll see what happens!
