Coloured light and hunting

Recommended Posts

I have been using a red lamp with great success. My usual prey are rabbits and often I have seen them clearly unaware or not bothered by the red light, but instead looking up to listen if I make a sound (nicely presenting their head for a clean shot). If I switch to white light they look at the light and are much more jumpy.

However, red light is one colour our eyes are least sensitive. I have noticed some hunting lamps employing green coloured light which is much more visible to human eyes, but what about to various vermin eyes?

To me, the logic would be that just as our eyes are most sensitive to green light, so would the quarry's eyes and that this would then not be worth investing in as I have white lights already?

What experience have you had with coloured lights while hunting and what reaction did the quarry show to them? Are there any other colours worth considering, perhaps blue, orange or yellow?

All feedback welcome before I decide if I will invest in another colour.

I use red ,amber ,blue and green filters when im lamping one permission driving round take anything from a hour to two we start off with the red filter then change it and do another circut ,Its amasing that changing the filter seems to settle the rabbits and you can shoot more on every circut just by changing the colour .The only thing i found a problem was it was hard to spot anything till they moved with the green filter .One thing i did find that makes a big differnce is turn the car headlights off and just use side lights and the lamp it doesn't seem to spook them as much as using headlights
