when i am saying this what i mean do this if the dog has marked. that is if the dog is a good marker.

one thing i never do is put them down at arms length and hold them there they wont know whats going on and good for biting i've been doing this 15 year and have learnt a couple of wee tricks that help along the way and the dog is an excellent marker if theres something at home she knows it had 5 seasons of work behind her and trust her all the way so as i said i will percivere with it but still being realistic that it just might not have it in him

Its no every ferret that makes the grade and i admire a lot of folk that spend time trying to get them going but sometimes its best to just say this ones a no go and it would help us if we where a bit more ruthless

agree with that matee

like i say i'm not going to give up after its first time out and will give him a chance but after a few years doing it you tend to pick up on wether a ferret is going to do well or just not do it at all and although i'm not writing him off just yet i honestly dont think he is going to be any good but like i say time will tell and he will be out again in the morning and see if he feels a bit better when i have his brother with him as i've not tried hid brother yet either so take the 2 tomorrow cos there identical and i cant tell them apart yet lol only had them about 5 or 6 days a week at the most so will see what tomorrow brings

to answer [the one] i understand about being a bit more ruthless but it depends on the person how much effort they want to put in. some animals are fast starters some are slow. a fast starter does not always make the best worker in my opinion. to [terriermanjohn].years ago i had a ferret who acted like yours. had him from a kit plenty of handling put him down empty 2/3 hole burrows no problem. when trying him on marked burrows he didnt want to know.when you say you never put a ferret down at arms length to quote you it wont know what is going on bite etc.on the other side of the coin it worked for me. at first he run back out after a peroid of time he went.on digging to a ferret for the first time i am sure they dont know what is going on the ferret adusts with time and experience.it worked for me maybe it isnt the method many people would choose.as you say you have a few tricks to help along the way i hope they work for you.all the best.

i know what you mean with fast and slow starters i've had a couple of slow starters that came good were some of the best i've had and i dont mind taking a bite from a ferret normally but these hobs are huge and not even the hardest of men would fancy a bite from them lol so i wont take the chance of it biting me hahaha but we will see how it goes with him

Have you tried letting him follow a more experienced ferret down a warren that's how iv always started them atb ade

no matee yesterday was the first time i had him out only had him a week

i had an excellent wee jill and a very promising tiny wee hob was only 7 inch long and had bolted a couple of rabbits but went out to feed them last week and they were dead which was quite a supicious one as they still had food from the night before plenty of water that wasnt frozen plenty of bedding and it was on a warmer night than we been getting so it wasnt the cold that got them

i have my suspicion to what happened but cant prove it yet but it will come out sooner or later the same as it did the first time it happened
