stevethefish 80
Well we were hoping to finish off where we left off last week but there was a shoot today so we had to make a quick change to our plans. Ray put in an appearance today too so there were 4 again, me stevo steve and ray, I thought we should try a bit of land that I had not done for almost 2 years, some at Metheringham and some at Coleby close on. Firstly I had to call at a lake and shoot a few ducks, I managed to get off 4 shots and dropped 4 mallards so that was a good start. We had a look around the lake where its been riddled with rabbits all year but unfortunately there was still far too much cover and it seemed almost impossible at the present. We went across the road in a small wood that I did a couple of years ago, the first set produced 6 rabbits and things looked good, but it was a bit of a false start as the sets in there were all deserted and we only managed a handfull more in there. I reckon that the last outbreak of mixy must have wiped them out. Back into the white van and we shot over to Coleby and we did a couple of sets that the farmer was having trouble with on a freshly sown field. We nailed a couple there and then went over to the quarry. This quarry was over run with rabbits when I first got the permission and I had a couple of years of excellent shooting with the .17hmr but then left it to recover. But as we got there it was apparent that this place too must have been hit with mixy as there were hardly any signs of activity, this was unbelievable considering the amount of rabbits that populated it. We did the rounds without a single bunny so decided to call it a day and planned to get back to the better sites next week, all being well we will make up for our sparse catch of 15 rabbits today. I suppose you cant have 30-50 bags every time, it would spoil us and probably has in a way. One good thing is we drove back past the area we are planning to do next week and the keeper has cut the brambles back for us exposing a 600 yard hedgerow thats crawling with bunnies, the keepers struggle to get the rabbits lamping as they tend to stay close to the hedge and bolt back easily when the lights come on, all the better for the white van men....................the story continues next week..........
