hargreavesheber 93
Just after a touch of advice from the experts please. My 1st lurcher is 16wk's old now and i have trained/training her to sit, stay, Lie-down and heel on the leed, all of which need a bit of polishing but generally good, especially if there's treats involved. She is also quite good at the recall unless there's other dogs about and she seems to turn deaf at times. Walking the other direction usually does the trick... It's the retrieve that i am just a bit unsure about. I use a rabbit skin dummy for training. She will go fetch and bring it ,sometimes right to me but other times drop it a few feet away. The question being, should i still reward for her dropping it a few feet away or save the treats for a correct retrieve? Any advice welcome especially teaching her to retrieve to hand... Cheers folks Quote Link to post

Cheers folks I would reward her only for bringing it all the way in, the only thing is, the pup may need a focus point for the retrieve, pups dont understand feet and inches, i use the palm of my left hand facing the pup for retrieve and recall, she has to touch his nose to the palm for the exercise to be complete, that way the pup has a point of contact that he understands,,its also handy for recall because the dog is touching you not a few feet away if ya want to throw the lead on him,,best of luck with her, she looks a smashing little thing,, Quote Link to post
