Gaz_1989 9,539
On Monday evening my pup passed a bit of blood in a very loose stool. It also had mucous in it. He seemed fine in himself and after a quick search on here everything pointed to colitis. It made sense really as he has only been with me for a week and has gone from having mostly dry food with raw every few days to having raw diet 3 meals a day. Ive been giving massive variety, tripe, egg, fish, lamb mince, breast of lamb, steak, offal, cooked veg mix twice per week etc. I always intended on keeping him on a dry meal a day while a pup but obviously with all this nice food about, he won't touch the dry hence being on a totally BARF diet. I think it was just too much too soon. Ive got him back on redmills dry, 3 meals a day softened with water to make a little 'gravy'. He seems fine now, stool is firm and no blood or mucous. Seems great in himself still. Too much energy! Lol. So when do you think I can introduce raw again? And is it likely that it will disagree with him again? Thanks Gaz
Guest chook
I would start off slowley - start off with some chicken mince for a while, then slowley add other types of minces - do this over a few months so it dosent over load the pup. You could add some slippery elm powder to it, as it helps sooth the stomach and helps stop colitis
Gaz_1989 9,539
Thanks for the reply mate. Will look at slippery elm powder. How long do you reckon before i can try him with breast of lamb again? Leave it until hes 6 months or so?
Guest chook
i would probably leave it a couple of weeks, then introduce the lamb breast slowley, just give him a bit every now and then, so his system gets used to it, you can do the same with other types of food, just leave a couple of weeks inbetween introducing different ones, with the slippery elm, just use it for about a week, just whilst hes getting used to raw again, tea spoon full once a day mixed with his food, i will warn you it does stink, but it does work wonders - you can also get it in tab form if thats easer. Another thing aswell, once off the elm, at any point if he starts to get colitis again after introducing a food then go back a step and introduce it at a later stage. Guest jt750
Unlikely it was colitus but probably a combination of too much different all at once ..as a previous poster daid try a month with minced chicken and in that month add some finely grated raw veg ..small amout increasing to what you think is appropriate ..what works for me might not work for you..in the second month try some red meat mince and feed every other day along side your chicken ..for treats use raw chicken wings and work from there
sandymere 8,263
Colitis is a term that covers a multiple of things and basically means inflammation of the bowel, blood and mucus are symptoms of this. Its usually caused by a simple infection and passes ok but occasionally may be a symptoms of something more serious. A small amount of breast of lamb will be a good start once things have settled; I’d avoid pet quality mince etc. Cooked veg /table scraps are also always good if tolerated. The more meat you give the lower the protein content of the complete but change brands/types gradually.
Gaz_1989 9,539
Thanks for the replys. I don't think it was anything serious as it's cleared up now. I started him off on his redmills after the loose stools, softened with a drop of hot water. At first he was reluctant but soon had it when he was hungry next day. Last few days i haveI mixed it with a little cooked lamb or chicken mice. I will offer him a piece of lamb breast Monday if he's still good after the weekend. Thanks for advice all, Gaz. doris 6
personally if the dog has a tendency to have a fragile tummy I would be v. careful of raw foods with high fat . . . . typically breast of lamb. High fat will be sure to give the dog the shites if so. I have always understood chick wings to be the "balanced" raw feed for dogs as it has it all. . . bone, muscle meat and fat (the skin). Please correct me if I am wrong. PS this is all from personal experience.
