ianh 83
Last night was awesome nice and windy and real dark so we took our usaul route by foot which takes around two to three hours good night, a fair few bunnys out for our normal haunt but real long way off and not much for our young dogs, they still getting the hang of it, as are we. anyway after one rabbit with pretty big ears to my mates collie whippet earlier (in the day through scrub) we really wanted a good run for my dog so we pressed on, but as usual friday night and the best places are already being done. basically the point is we have been really struggling to get much on the lamp at all for our dogs to run at, nothing out in fields all close to hedge and all well lamp shy. and its all of our first seasons so we honestly dont have a clue anyway id found some new land on the map that looked a possibility so we went to check it out, parked the car and walked the mile or two round so we came at it from the right direction with the wind. first off is two big fields, like i say we havent been here before so didnt know where to expect the bunnys if at all. but F**K me i havent seen so many, first off is two real big field with a good few bunnys couple with big ears, let my dog slip on one but it made cover, my mates dog had a run and pretty much ruined that field in the process carrying on hunting after he lost it. then the rest of the ground is basically a huge mosaic of rough land, gravel, sand, spiny scrub thats shreds your arms and they odd barbed wire fence and small boulder, oh and literally everwhere we shone the lamp we found rabbits. thing is my mated dog came back limping and mine had a fair few cuts, nothing too nasty. we have never lamped this type of land and just want to know how safe you all think it is and any tips on how to approach it? i think with a good bit of daytime mooching we can find the worst areas and stay away from them and it is pretty big. Why not go there during the day a few times with the dogs and get yourselfs and the dogs used to the land, try and remove any dangers if you can and let the dogs and yourselfs get a mental note of the best and worsed areas to lamp, if it was me i would keep inexperienced dogs away from land like that as they are likely to get a bad injury or worse,cheers......john:thumbs: Quote Link to post
ianh 83
yeah you might be right about people not lamping it, other thing is its a long walk no road access and lots of fences and gates, etc to cross and everyone here seems to love tearing about fields and lamping out the window. think your right though, need a good look at it in the daylight really. ianh 83
yeah same here mate was a nice change to not have to run, hide, clamber through/over hedges etc. we have a colliexwhippet and a bullx. both learning and its taking a while, but they starting to come good, running straight down beam now and trusting me theres something there even if they cant see it, bullx just needs to get better at striking the rabbit, collixwhippet seems to like daytime best. Big bald beautiful 1,231
if the dog trys his best and gives 100% then , just carry one. i have some spots that only flying machines can catch on, 4 rabbits is a good tally and ive come home empty handed a few time. that what you get lamping places that realy no one wants or should be shot over.
