First day out this season

Recommended Posts

Took a trip to a new permission this morning with the ferrets. Theres a road to the farm that must be 2-300 yards long, the burrows are on either side of the road.

One side has a lot more burrows that the other. We had planned to just to the quieter side and come back another time and do the other. Netted up and had a wee break to let things settle down. Collared up and sent one ferret in. She went through from hole to hole but nothing bolted. When she came out i picked her up and moved to the top and put her in. Quickly got one hitting the net, but after that there was nothing, ferret just kept going in and out.

So we decided to have a bash at the other side, see how we got on. We netted up, was quite an awkward one as the hedgerow was very thick and there was a burn on the other side which mad that side hard to get to. I went round the other side but didnt look like there was any burrows, all seemed to be accessible from the road side. Ferret in, one bolted very quickly, then had about 3 escapees from the other side. My mate went round to find a burrow i had missed, this was it, quickly blocked up with a brick.

You can see a pile of rocks in the above pic, it stupidly never occurred to me that there would be rabbits in there. We heard a rabbit squeeling and could see its feet through the rocks, i managed to pull some rocks away and quickly dispatched. A few mins later we had one bolt from the rocks but ran into a netted hole so managed to get it. Once the ferret came back out we decided just to call it a day there and go over to the farm to have a go at some ferals with the airguns. Managed about 10 ferals with nearly all stuck on the roofs but thats a write up for the airgun section.

Anyway heres the bag for the day. Was good to get out with the ferrets again and a great day was had :D
