I wouldn't leave it open it's much more susceptible to infection,you can obtain skin staplers easily and cheeply

 

enough and they are really easy to use. as others have said you need to be careful with antibiotics, we all know

 

that a broad spectrum antibiotic will probably knock out most infections but care must be taken,REMEMBER vets are

 

trained and have a good idea (through experience and knowledge)what to use although sometimes even really good

 

vets need to take samples and test them for sensitivity to various antibiotics before they are sure which to

 

prescribe. i think it best to keep staplers both at home and in your "dog bag" which you take ferreting/lamping

 

along with a hibi-scrub/water solution and some form of antiseptic spray for immediate "first aid" on the spot

 

and also some form of pain relief,anti-inflammotary tablets and YOUR chosen antibiotic,so treatment is instant.

Some wounds cant be stapled.. Find yourself a greyhound vet or a working dog vet(where abouts are you)..If your leaving the wound open, clean it as much as you can. You say you have a course of antibiotics, so hopefull y they should do the trick...One of mine did himself on barbed at the beginning of the season. It was almost impossible to stitch. So took him to the vet(greyhound specilst).. He advised me that it didnt need stitches,(any other vet would have stitched it, took the money and had you go back for a check up) but give him anti's and keep it clean, the gell he gave me was very good... There was a big flap of skin hanging, and he said we may have to cut it off. Luckily it all pulled together and healed very nicely, without any more treatment needed.... Good luck..

No we have the NHS for people but I don't think that covers dogs so either you pay or the dogs go without treatment. Purple spray won't help and may even slow healing!

the cut itself is only to the skin no mussle damage at all.

i took him to the vet today and he said to stich up the wound it would be £300!!!!!!!!

he said the next option would be to leave it to heal naturally and just keep it clean but it would take a while.

i opted for this and got a 2 week course of antibiotics with some cleaning solution.

£300 for stiches there make it impossible to treat our dogs.

Any advise would be a great help..

You need to source a different vet Matt. My brother in laws dog cut the top of it's tail on Sunday night, he took it to the vets at 8pm and got 5 staples put in it plus anti biotics and they charged him £27.
