shoulder injury

My four year old lurcher was having a run around a couple of weeks ago, they took off across the playing fields and as he ran up an embankment he reared up at a strange angle. Now i dont know whether he hit a post or twisted it. As they came back he had a bit of a set to with the greyhound which was quickly defused but when I leashed them I noticed a four inch tear in his neck(stitched and fully healed now).I don't know whether this was done by a collision or the greyhound which is now muzzled when out with the others and Jack is still lame so is kept on the lead. Does anyone know how long this could take to heal as I injured my on shoulder a few years ago and it still gives me jip! Cheers Jeffers

Unfortunately as you don’t know what the injury is no one can say how long it will take to heal. A skin tear should be pretty much sorted, a tendon could take months or at worst always be a weak point. Is there full range of movement in the joint? As always if not sure get a vet to have a look.

Thanks Sandymere, he does seem to have full movement in the joint, he just looks very stiff and favours the other side. It's a shame for him, he's missed the start of the last three seasons through injuries. I will get him into the vets this week and see what they come up with.

Had Jack to the vets on thurs, they did all the joint movements and could't find the problem, just gave him 2weeks of anti-inflammatory and said if he's still lame after that, to bring him back for an x-ray.I've been told about a greyhound vet that might be able to find the problem without a pricey x-ray, so I think he's my next option if the tablets don't work(fingers crossed). Jeffers!

i was going to sugguest a greyhound vet upon reading your post before a £££££££££££££vets good look in your quest mate hope he recovers and does you good

cheers mate, got the greyhound vets number this morning, he's still lame so I will be getting him looked at this week. Hope things work out for you and your litter of pups! atb Jeffers.

I decided to keep him on the lead and let the tablets run their course. All looks well, no stiffness now so I think some exersize with the bike for a week or so before I let him off the lead, poor sods going to go nuts when he does get off. Fingers crossed and thanks again for your replies Jeffers

Glad the dog is seeming better . . . my bitch ruptured the ligaments in her shoulder and it took a year of treatment to get her right, and if i'm honest she will never be the dog she was. A long walk, or a high fence will have her limping again. But she's 6 nearly 7 and will never be a dog that can cope without exercise, she thrives on being active. I have her on devils claw and a joint drug and we just manage it the best we can. If she gets lame a day of rest and an anti immflam does the job. I will however never stop her doing what she loves, i just don't encourage over exercise now, i.e ball work, flirt stick etc.

 

I hope your dog recovers completely.
