markha 99
So, Into the freezer last night and pulled out a big old rabbit with the thoughts of Moroccan Rabbit for dinner. I left the rabbit overnight to defrost along with a litre of frozen chicken stock from a couple of weeks ago. Now, I remember preparing this particular rabbit a month or so ago as it had very big thumpers on it, (it went in the freezer on 19th July 2010). There wasnt anything particularly odd about it, smelled ok, organs all in very good condition, just a bit milky between the skin and the carcase. It also smelt allright this morning after being defrosted. Anyway, into the slow cooker with the chicken stock, a couple of garlic cloves half crushed, some raisins, some baby potatoes and a few spices. I had lentils and beans ready to go in much later in the day. And thoughts of this served with some fresh couscous were making my mouth water. However, its all gone bloody pearshaped now allright! I was just going to turn the rabbit over and on lifting the lid off the slow cooker the most foul smell hit me, quiet litterally, in the face, disgusting smell of decaying and badness! I was almost gagging as I pulled the rabbit out and dumped it in the bin along with all the rest of the veg etc. This is the 1st time I have had this happen and wondered if this rabbit had been left in the freezer too long, as I mentioned it went in on 19th July so its been frozen for about 8 weeks, has that been too long or did I miss something on prepping it originally? Ah well, back to the drawing board for tonights dinner.
events co-ordinator 353
Not too long in the freezer we use them a lot older than that!
Lab 10,979
Maybe it was your stock?????
Leewx 2
Maybe it was your stock????? Chicken stock can be a bit funny, can go sour very quickly. You should freeze home mad stock in ice-cube trays or bags. Just take them out as needed from frozen very handy!
scalesntails 118
I've used rabbits that have been in the freezer over a year before without any issue.
