To spay or not to spay

Recommended Posts

Right, my patt bitch is 6 months old - yes, I know she is too young to breed but I am thinking ahead.

Anyway, I am wondering whether to breed from her. If so, what age? What sire?

Where I live there is very little game and she is mainly a family pet.

My reasons for doing it are:-

1. She is lovely and it would be nice to have her progeny (I would keep one).

2. I have friends who want her puppies now (but probably wouldn't when the time actually came as circumstances always change).

Reasons not to:-

1. Lots of unwanted dogs, espcially Patts who would be very happy here.

2. Can cause complications and I would hate that and never forgive myself

3. I am no expert about breeding - never had puppies from Day1

4. There are no other Patts here so I would have to think about another-breed dog or import

So, if I decide not to, should I just have her spayed as early as possible. I left my Bernese and did not spay her (no pups) until she nearly died of an womb infection. I was told I should have had her spayed earlier not left it so long.

Any useful suggestions?
