FOXHUNTER 5,022
A farmer rang me to say "Can you shoot some rabbits as there eating my cabbages " Well I decided to have a look last night taking the .22 and also the .243 in case I saw a buck or a fox. The wind had been blowing gale force all day but seemed to drop off a bit as it often does before dark .After chatting with the farmer and giving me some lamb joints I got my .22 and stalked around the farm buildings , a rabbit hopped out from behind an old roller at around 70 yards , I steadied myself on the edge of a barn and off it went to bunny heaven.. As I picked up the rabbit I happened to glance into the next field which is uncut grass and noticed 2 roe feeding .I couldnt identify the sex of the beasts as they had their heads down but on instinct I rushed back to the car to collect my .243 and bins I glassed through my bins and could clearly see a buck and so I planned my stalk as they were around 300 yards away. I skirted along the top hedge keeping the wind right and wandered down the next hedge spying all the time as the deer were now unsighted. As I got to where I last saw them it was take one step and glass take another step and glass due to the long grass and vegetation. Then all of a sudden I noticed the tips of antler in the long grass and I was only 20 yards away . I crouched down , placed rifle on my sticks and as I ascended the buck stretched its neck revealing its head and neck , I quickly placed a 100 grner under its chin. At this the doe stood up and just looked at the buck as if to say " get up then " I was only 20 yards away and she wasnt concerned at all until I moved. After a poor start to the season it is now picking up I then had a little mooch around the farm and bagged 6 bunnies and also saw 6 roe in total , all does so I hope they go and find male friends during the impending rut Edited July 18, 2010 by FOXHUNTER Quote Link to post
