As above. I know these are protected however one of the angling clubs I'm in has a concession to cull 5 or 10 per year from it's complex. I'm not sure yet I haven't seen the paperwork. The old lad that used to knock 'em off has gone and I've been asked if I want to have a go.

I just wonder if anyone has dealt with this before?

I know from time spent on the banks that it is rare for one of these to come withing a 100 yds of the banks, they seem to have learned to associate anglers bivvies with danger. I also realise to to the presence of anglers 24/7 shooting at range with even the HMR accross water is out of the question.

Looks like staking out under the sitting trees during autumn with a hushpower 12g, any comments.

The anglers don't mind they hate the bloody things but I don't want to cause too much noise or endanger anyone. :drinks:

years ago we had a licence to shoot them on a trout farm , early morning plotting up in the centre of the holdings and we soon bagged them up but you have a large water to contend with which makes it awkward.

like you said you never see them on the bank , does the water have any islands you can get out to? if not it may be worth putting a raft out within shooting distance and maybe making it so it has a backstop on it.

its a big ask but you could pre-arrange to have the lake closed for two hours from dawn but i doubt they would go for that

oh and they stink :sick:

Hi, They do roost, it's just a case of finding the tree's, and it's not hard to find they are covered in sh-t, they look like silver tree's LOL. that's if they are not just coming to feed and going away again, if it's quite a big water and they are getting plently to eat they should be staying, maybe on an island,It can be good sport. I had a ticket to take five through a local angling club, made very little difference to the 15 that were here but better than nothing.

I suppose I was quite lucky in that they don't fish 24/7 here and they are as much against them as I was. The tree they roost in is just behind the lakes with a field behind it, so basically I found a hide and shot them as they came in, not one of them took less than 36g of 1's to kill it, sometimes both barrels of same, very tough old birds.

I did come contact with the old guy a few years ago before he died. Great old salt, just remember him saying;

"They say we can only shoot 5/10, he hehe, but they don't know how many I do shoot" nodnod winkwink sort of fashion.

It is a big area, 4 big lakes and a small one plus a section of river which might just be the favourite option thinking about it, seldom night fished, loads of trees for roosting.

Whenever I've been out early and no one is about the trees are full of them.

No chance of me getting rafted, the club wouldnt accept it plus the waters are up to 25ft deep, .

:tongue4:

I can get a small area under trees put out of bounds for a morning by the clubs notice board and a bit of tape.

Quite looking forward to trying now, thanks chaps. I hate the buggers, which will only make it more pleasurable :thumbs:
