Depends... what kit are you using now?

I have a canon 1.4 converter, but it only works with some lenses, and you will lose an f stop or two, so it certainly won't help the low light issue.

The best thing is to get the longest, fastest lens you can afford and turn the ISO up as high as you can without losing too much quality.

If the kingfishers are sitting still and you can rest the camera on something you can get away with a fairly slow shutter speed. If they are flying track the movement very smoothly and fire at will ;)

Yip, its all down to the gear, I use a Nikon 1.4 tc on a Nikkor 300mmf4 AFS, and the results are just as sharp as not useing the tc (well almost, not any noticeable difference outside of photoshop) This combo, produces better quality images than many prime lenses. Need fast glass though..f4 at least

Cant put a Nikon tc on that lense mate, and pointless putting any other make on it either. Low light photography can be so enoying, at 300mm with that lense it could mean down to shutter speeds of 30, which is impossible to hand hold without the pics being blurred. Busy checking you exif data to see whats up..Hope your not shooting in P..

Ive got the same lense, although I dont use it much now, but I have got some really good shots from it in the past..

Yeah all my best shots with it are in good lighting conditions not so good when its dull. I've also got the 18-200mm zoom would a TC work with that? The bit were I'm taking the shots is a large gully with thick trees all around and even when its bright the canopy from the over hanging brances throws a lot of shade on my end :wallbash:
