I have always thought you could own an airgun at 14 if it was given to you by your mum or dad or some one els with there permition. I have grown up since i was 14 with my friends owning airguns. But thats not the case apparently its a chriminal ofence to give a 14 year old an airgun I know there are lads on hear who have airguns is this illegal then?

Person aged 14 -17 may not buy or receive an air rifle or air rifle ammunition as a gift, how ever they may borrow an air rifle from a person that is OVER 18 and use it on land they have permission on with out supervision.

Section 144 States (copied and pasted from above document:

 

144. At present, children of any age may use air weapons, subject to certain controls. Children under 14 may not buy, hire, be given or own air weapons or ammunition. They may use them under the supervision of a person over the age of 21, as long as they do not shoot beyond the boundaries of the property or premises where they are using the weapon. They may also use them for target practice at approved clubs, or at a shooting gallery for air weapons or miniature rifles. Young people between the ages of 14 and 17 may be given or lent air weapons and ammunition, but may not themselves buy or hire them. They may carry an air rifle (though not an air pistol) in a public place, as long as it is covered by a securely-fastened gun cover; they may use an air weapon for target practice at an approved club of which they are a member, or at a shooting gallery as above.

However under the 2006 V.C.R. Act, it IS an offence (punishable by a £1,000 fine to give an air weapon or ammunition for it to a person under the age of 14, BUT, it is not an offence for the young person to receive it

Wouldn't it be NICE and SIMPLE for them to state YES or NO to such a question instead of reffering from one piece of legislation to another paragraph that then refers to another piece of legislaion that has nothing to do with the original, but refers to yet another paragraph that then says yes, but

im 14 and i did buy my airgun out of my own money....so does that mean i have commited an offence my dad has no intrest at all so i do own my airgun and he says he dose not want gun oil and lens cleaning equipment around the house so it all stays, including my rifle, in my house.

do you hvae your own house at 14!? i expect technically it was an offence but just say it's your parents if ever asked you shouold be fine chance of anything happening is very remote unless youre dangerous with it etc

Your responsible adult purchased the rifle, having borrowed your money they will repay the loan as part of your inheritance.

However your responsible adult decided he/she does not like shooting afterall and have loaned you the rifle and they correctly supervised you with the rifle when on your lawfull permissions until you reached the age of 14 when you were allowed to shoot on those permissions unsupervised.

As you say it stays in the house and is the responsability of your responsable adult even though its on permanent loan until you are of legal age to own the rifle yourself, when your responsible adult will relinquish all to you as you will then be a responsible adult yourself and said adult may retire from his/her legal obligations

 

You have proved yourself time and again to be a responsible and safe shooter.

Read the posted lump of legislation again. It is perfectly legal for someone aged 14 to 17 to OWN an air rifle, but they are not allowed to BUY or RENT one. You can however be given one as a GIFT!

 

So the responsible adult bought the air rifle, and gave it to you. Where the money came from is neither here nor there!
