Quite please with myself

Recommended Posts

Out stalking with a pal 3 weeks ago at our ground on Deeside we spotted a few good bucks. We wanted to harvest one and the plan was for me to do the stalk, spot then watch the deer and then stay back and guide my pal in to the shot. We take turns and it works well for us.

The smaller of a pair of bucks presented a shot and it was taken, about 125 mtr out with a 100gn .243, with the beast going down cleanly, and it turned out to be a cracker!

It was a cracking head and we decided to have a go at keeping more than a photo and the antlers. This was only my second attempt but i think i am happy with the results. It now has pride of place in my dining room. I still have a couple of jobs to finish it, a couple of wires in the ears now need clipped off and it needs a tiny bit of paint on the edge of the mouth and eyes.

I guess it is a fine diversion from fixing waders!

you should have had it measured first mate think you would have had a medal hung below it.

John I think you are right, we compared it to a skull in our local shop, a bronze medal and this was quite a bit larger. We did discuss it but we kind of dont "get" the medal idea.

Our thoughts are why give us a medal when the deer did all the hard work growing the antlers, ok i guess this is a slightly thought process but we are happy enough. All we did was point and press!

And as i said, his big brother is still out there! We have seen 4 or 5 with similar heads, and it is interesting that they are very much larger and more advanced re velvet than the bucks on our higher ground inland.

Well done on the set up mate .My only point would be that the nose area is a bit too square .Not meant as a critism ,just an observation that can be addressed next time if the need arises .Nice buck there mate .

I too though this which is why i never commented on mount. I was to polite but now its been raised he's right .

nice effort though :clapper:

I think you are both right, it probably is a little to square, nice learning point. Perhaps the shaddow from the flash is emphasising it a little, because as i sit here looking at it is ok, but good point well made.

If and when his big brother shows himself again perhaps i will get another done, i would like one in summer coat on the other wall!
