Welsh Porbeagles

Went sharking last week off North Wales. Unfortunately it was one of those days - 30 miles out to the wrecks and nothing coming up for bait. Resorted to drifting with some less than ideal mackerel, and the solitary pollack we'd caught. Went through the motions for a couple of hours and eventually headed inshore for some tope on the reef. New best of 50lbs which saved the day.

Has anyone had experience with Porbeagles off Wales, as we are up for another go next season, maybe a bit earlier in the season?

The skipper has had several to the side of the boat already and has also seen thresher out there. He tends to drift the wrecks for them rather than put a slick over the side, but I guess that's because he's only usually contacting them on wrecking trips after he's had a few pollack chewed in half on the way up!

Anyone ever tried sharking off North Wales with a few onion sacks of rubby-dubby on the go?

I was fishing llandwyn island from the shore about 12 years ago,mid july.Seen a group of 4 large shark about 50 yd's out, don't know what they were but have been told by some of the local lad's that they were probably porbeagle.Used to be a fair number of tope landed by beach anglers around the island, mostly caught either end of the menai.
