robsharpe 1
i take its over 12 ft pound then  , fac ,it was the thickness of the plate that really got to me the sort of power it would take to get through it grom the distance they were shooting it from Quote Link to post
Guest kevsterjw
Blimey the plate looks well think. Doesn't it really drum it home how much power there is in them. I'd of loved to have a wonder round a place like that. Quote Link to post
robsharpe 1
kev the palce is vast they wanted to extend the ranges to shoot the super big long range missiles that plate is honestly about 5 inch thick not sure if its lead or something else but some holes were all the way thru Quote Link to post
Guest baldie
Its a popular misconception, that steel for tanks etc, is the hardest there is....it isnt, its designed to absorb the round fired at it, not try to stop it without penetration.I worked in a foundry for a good few years, as a furnaceman/ladleman, and we made a lot of stuff for vickers ordnance, parts for the challenger tanks etc. When we had made parts, we had to supply a test plate of the same steel with the parts. They would fire a round at the plate, then measure the damage, and send it back to us for re smelting, they usually came back with a round stuck half way through. The steel has an "elastic" quality, and the clever way a tank will deflect incoming fire, is more to do with the clever angles used in its construction, than the steel. All good stuff.
