MuttleMcTuttle 21
It's a nice enough shot Kay, and the clouds are impressive, but as you said, it doesn't look quite right... It looks a bit "over-processed". What was the image straight from the camera like? If you want any help, just ask and no doubt someone will be around to answer questions in non-technical terms

Kay 3,709
I think i should have shinned the fence & gone into the next field to the right .. the trees were in an arch shape & i think if there had been some cattle or something in the field it would have looked better I also had the wrong lens on .so tomorrow if its bright enough i will have another go at it in the same place
MuttleMcTuttle 21
Yep, it needs a little more of interest in the foreground, maybe there will be some deer around next time you visit The original pic is a bit over-exposed (it looks a little too bright and the colours are a bit washed out). i don't know what program you use for editing, but you may be able to correct this by using the brightness and contrast or the "adjust levels" tools. In the first pic it looks as if the "highlights and shadows" have been adjusted - this has brought out a lighter halo above the trees and darker patches above the clouds. It tends to make the land look very harsh, brittle almost... It can be a very good effect because sometimes it looks like a pen & ink colourwash sketch If you want to get good clouds the secret is to use a circular polarising filter, or a plain grey grad filter. This will darken off the sky and bring out the clouds really well. If you don't have a fliter like this then the answer is to point your camera at the sky and lock the exposure, then move the camera back to take the pic. This may mean that the land will be a bit dark, but you can lighten in up a little in software. I'm glad to see you get out with the camera so much - I think you really do have a talent for photography

MuttleMcTuttle 21
Mutt what do you think about gimp is it worth downloading or would I be better getting elements? To be honest, I've not actually used Gimp, but a lot of people say it's a good program for basic editing. I believe it's free? so definitely worth a try. Picassa is another freebie and ok if you don't want (or need) to do too much editing & make a lot of fine adjustments. Elements is probably the best basic editing software - it's got all the essential bits of Photoshop CS4 but without all the stuff that most people never use. If you want to work with RAW files Lightroom is good, but I prefer Capture One. When it comes to photo editing less is usually more
