Out for a few hours this afternoon

Recommended Posts

Had a few hours to spare this afternoon and as the sun was out decided to grab the longnet, flask and me young jill and set off to my permission. I chose to do the awkward sets that i've been to lazy to do at the start of the season, they hold the odd rabbit but today wasnt about numbers just a nice afternoon bringing the young jill on.

Got to the first bury, longnet out quick test of the locator, collerd her up and in she went. she worked the set really well but nothing was home, as i was putting her away i noticed a rabbit sat 20 meters away on a small banking, reached for me camera but down under it went. Got that set netted up only about 10 holer on a small sandy bank but covered in blackthorn. in she went and was onto them straight away, less than 5 mins before the first one bolted and hit the net. dipatched it and whilst removing all the twigs and bramble and setting the net straight i didnt notice another bolt at the far end of the set, i turned round to see the little fecker just about to make good his escape. sprinted over and dived but it just got away :wallbash: the jill looking on in disgust. nothing more at home so net up and onto the next set.

after messing around for about 20 mins getting the net around this next set i sat and had a cuppa and took a few snaps with the camera. Tea break over, in she went she popped out of one hole and she flew straight back in. A few moments later she bolted one that slammed into the net and got nicely wrapped up. another one in the bag :D

she stayed down for about 5 mins so i got the Mk1 locator out, started at the hole the last bolted from working my way accross the set. I got about 5 paces and the second rabbit flew into the net with my jill still attached to the ar*se end. i ran over to the ball of teeth kicking feet, necked the rabbit parted ferret and that was the third in the bag.

I put her back in but no more rabbits from this set or the other 2 we tried, 3 for a few hours wasnt too bad for this time of year and the set i was doing(should of been 4 but this fat man dont move so good) i was so happy with my little jill she worked her socks off, she's very small and so fast she covers ground and a good rate and keen as mustard, high hopes for her next season. gutted the bunnies let her have her fill of warm liver while i was finishing me flask of tea.

I took a slow walk back to the motor looking up at the sky hoping the snow doesnt fall so i could get out with the air rifle later. All in all a good days sport, cant wait to get out on sunday for another bash.

Remember a bad day's hunting is better than a good day at work.
