NIGHTVISION

Recommended Posts

Nightvision seems to be a huge subject and is obviously still growning. But, Where do you start ? Is it as straightforward as fitting a NV scope on your rifle ? or would you be better off just starting with a hand held unit for searching for foxes in stead of lamping. I have read read a lot of articles on NV but they tend to skip around the subject and fall short on good information and facts.

Buy a dedicated unti, the best you can afford, i have used them all over the years the nearest you get to military spec is the NVRS-F with an extra Infa red & double lense.

The element of suprise more than makes up for the shot, i had 100's of goats, deer, & pigs after twilight .Use a lamp to quick spot, the target.N/V to do the job.

For the $$$ they are a bargain, expect to pay $800+ s/h unit.

Thanks for getting back to me Clint, much appreciated. I have realised that I have probably put my post on wrongly and in the wrong place. I really dont have a clue about night vision, I have never even looked through one of any type as I dont even know anyone who has got one. Someone did once tell me that when shooting with night vision the ranges are hugely reduced because the foxes will come closer without getting spooked, do you agree ?. I am prepared to spend up to £1000. Though I am a bit reluctant to take my scope on and off my rifle to swap them round as required, it seems like a lot of bother. (Only got one rifle) and do you know how you go about getting a weaver rail onto the likes of a Sauer 202. The other thing I was thinking about was the GB Elite add on but I am a bit concerned about the length it adds to the scope. what do you think ? or if its not too much trouble, tell me exactly what you would recommend that I do ?

Personally i would not touch an add on. As you say too much length, make an unbalanced shot, uncomfertable too. so i would make me an unhappy shooter.

why not get a dedicated with quick release mount, most are & will simply unscrew & go back in seconds, as for the std day scope ,quick release are available also in 25 /30 mm mounts.

remember to treat any N/V scope with care , with no artificial light passing thrpugh it, & keeping the prism perfect .

before splashing a £1k + try the NVRS-F (top n/v) with good Infa red add on, you will be amaised at the clarity..Avoid ATN, Vomz scopes, some Dipol n/v are good also. mail me if you wish.

Stay away from GB sights, the guy who was the distributor went down the pan, you will only pick up one secondhand, thus you take the chance it may be a repair job already! As Clint said spend the most you can afford, then is some new digital dedicated sights on the market now the Pulsar DigiSight I beleive you can get for under £1k and I Imagine it will do the job nicely (Scott Country sell them in Castle Douglas, still a trek for it but you could ask to see it working). If you want a trip over to Edinburgh to see through my ATN Trident Pro you are more than welcome, but they are a Gen 2+ £2k job! If you are using it for foxing then it is worth sticking a £2k on your credit card lol!
