There is really no reason to ever add any hotblood greyhound to these dogs. They are not really "lurchers" at all. The predominant blood in them is already greyhound. There may be some deerhound from way back when in them but its mostly just greyhound blood with a dash of this or that throughout the years. There is no reason to ever add hotblood greyhound to dogs if the men that are breeding and raising the dogs are breeding for speed already in order to catch a runaway coyote with a slip between 200 and 400 yards. It does get added here and there but in my opinion should only be done if you see a serious reason to do so and the only reason would be if your dogs are gettin out run. I have been outrun only 2 times this entire season and once was just Sunday and thats only cause my dogs were out of shape from givin them a couple weeks off and then running them hard on Saturday on hard frozen ground and their feet were tender and they couldnt turn with the coyote through the cover they were running him. Had he decided to run out in the open he would have been dead in 200 yards but he was smarter than that. The other time I got outrun I was being silly and tryin to see what I was feeding and dumped that at a ridiculously long distance. Had my male dog not been crippled I dont think he would have got away at all cause his "run up" was absolutely incredible at one time.

Thanks for the reply Dan,

Never thought of it before but i suppose Stag's are a type of Longdog not Lurcher if theres no herding/terrier blood in them, maybe thats why you dont need to add any hardbloood?

And im envious of the wide open space you must have mate,"400 yd slip" were lucky to have 2 fields round here over 400 yds square, lol.

Im still envious Dan.

We did hunt some fairly big land at one time, but with the terrier/lurcher combination for bolters ussually,we had some pretty vast permission on the Lincs/Notts border and had some good sport walking off the scrub when nothing was to ground, thats probably the closest you could get to your type of hunting over here,we do have some moorland but you could walk it for weeks without getting near a fox, they tend to be on the wooded valley sides and steer clear of open ground[at least in daylight]

Shame the laws an ass,we had some exellent sport back then.

atb steve.

Most the of the slips or dumps are at the 100 to 200 yard range though. We dont really slip here though. We either dump out a truck or we walk hunt them and when it warms a bit I will be huntin off my mules.

Hunting from mules. We'll need some pics of that.

Nice job as always!
