Lurcher Missing - Kent

Recommended Posts

WOODY - young male neutered lurcher went missing on a walk yesterday (29th January) in a heavily wooded area near Ide Hill in Kent and despite knowing the woods well has not been seen since.

He is quite distinctive, having a mostly black body and brindle legs. He was wearing a collar and tag and is microchipped. Woody is a pet, not a working dog and his family are distraught that he is missing.

It was reported that members of a shoot in the area had no sightings of him; unfortunately we are now hearing reports that he may in fact have been shot (see post below).

Unfortunately there are rumours - currently unconfirmed - that this dog was shot, possibly on Thursday or Friday last week, in the area he went missing.

A "greyhound type" dog was seen in or near a pheasant pen and it seems shot at.

No body has been found; the landowner says he has never shot a dog and never would.

That does not rule out others, though nobody has come forward to report it.

This was a much loved pet dog which strayed once, and those using the land were advised of this immediately. He was wearing collar and tag and was microchipped. His owners spent five days searching for this dog before hearing these rumours.

Whatever the rights and wrongs, they really need to know if this was their dog.

There's now been confirmation that Woody was shot, probably around 10.00 am on Friday morning. His presence on the land had been advised to those who needed to know on Thursday evening.

His owners were still looking for him on Monday evening when they first heard rumours of this.

Nobody has reported shooting Woody, whether by accident or deliberately. We do not know the whereabouts of his body. A silence has descended. His owners have asked for his collar as confirmation but this has not been forthcoming.

What a sad end for a dog. And whatever the reason (or lack of it - it seems we will never know) for the shooting, it doesn't reflect well that whoever did it did not inform his owners.

Sad indeed for the pet and his owners. Did the dog go missing on private land? It just goes to prove that people need to have a solid recall on their dog before letting it loose. Cruel lesson to learn.

These things are easily said, but we don't actually know what went on.

Woody was two-and-a-half and was off-lead, and recalling, every day. Sometimes dogs get distracted, or panicked, or caught up on something. We don't know why he didn't recall, or why he was shot.

He wasn't being walked on the day of the shoot but the day before, it's not as if he was deliberately put at risk, and the shoot were advised that day that he was missing in the area.

His owners did everything they could to find him but were not allowed onto the land of the day of the shoot. It seems somebody got to him before they did. If this dog's end was justified, why has nobody come forward? Something just doesn't add up.
