Help With Mk1 Ferret locator

Recommended Posts

good evening all. I was wondering if someone can enlighten me

I'm wondering, does a 15ft locator work accurately with 8ft collars, accurate readings, :hmm:

Also, does the 8ft box work with 15ft collars accurately? :hmm:

Looking forward to your views on this.

Many thanks

Sorry mate never mixed the two boxes but I can tell you for certain that a 15ft mk1 is accurate with a mk3 collar.

With an 8ft mk1 box you double the reading with mk3 collar and it is accurate.

The next time I am out I will test the mk1 8ft and 15ft box on 8ft collars I no longer own a 15ft mk1 collar. You can also tell the difference between the mk3 and the mk1 collar with the mk1 box.The knocking is slower with a mk3 collar

Hope this don't confuse to much P1

hi mk1 15ft boxs pick up mk1 8ft collars same as the 8 ft mk1 boxs picks up 15ft collar only up to 8ft :clapper::boxing:

I used to use an 8ft collar and a 15ft collar with the same (8ft mk1 box) box . The box picks up the 15 ft collar at -surprise surprise- 15 ft . Once you are working within 8ft the calibration sticker on the "8ft box" is pretty accurate with either collar . I think actually that the only diference between a 15foot set and an8ft box is that Deben put a different sticker on the depth gauge wheel!.

As Para1 has said the mk 3 (and mk2 )collars will both work with the old style locator box . You get a range of about 10to 11 feet and I actually find the collars give a steadier signal when used with the mk 1 box than with the mk 3 they were intended for !

You can always get a ruler and test the accuracy of the reading at home and put your own marks on the sensitivity wheel at the required distance from the collar . My depth indication sticker went awol years ago and I just used a hot nail to scratch the dial after measuring the distance from the collar . Accuracy is spot on .

Yes mate the 8ft box will pick up the 15ft collar no worries. down to 8ft obviously :whistling:

ATB

Wrong -well sort of :whistling: The box itself will pick up the collar at 15ft but the sticker only goes up to eight feet so you don't actually know how close you are until you've worked you way a bit closer . This is confusing is'nt it ? :D

"EXACTLY" Thats why I said it works to 8ft :wallbash: . Surley if you didn't need to know far away from your ferret you was they wouldn't have put stikers on them in the first place I mean theres a good chance it'll be in the warren somwere! Just thought as the chap asked a genuine question I would give him a genuine answer without the need to confuse him.....Silly me hay :hmm:

No no mate not silly you . think we are on the same side just at different angles :D . I gave the guy a genuine answer too . The 8ft locator will find your ferret at 15 feet . Simple as that .You just turn the sensitivity knob down as usual and work in close using the noise until you are onto the last four or five feet on the gauge at which point the 8 ft and the 15 ft have pretty much the same sensitivity and you go by the readings on the dial from there if you like .

At the end of the day he'll probably end up buying a mk 3 collar which will work fine with the mk1 up to 10 or 11 feet especially if he puts in a bit of practice above ground first . All the best

Believe it or not folks, I actually managed to follow all of you. :icon_eek:

The original reasoning for the question is that i wanted to get myself a set off of ebay, but there aren't that many for sale with three collars so will probably have to mix and match

And thanks to you guys i can do that with confidence ( at least to 8 feet  )

Thanks again guys, :toast:

Ps, i am presuming then that a 15ft box will be accurate with reading the 8ft collar to 8 ft also.
