Brimmer 220
Whats going on? its Monday and hardly any reports of days out? Are the rabbits safe? Are the animals getting fat eating grass? Sounds like a day for the terrier for day 13. All my problems just start again! He's 9 yrs old. At 5 years old, he's finally got close to being a useful aid to ferreting, but always gets his nose shoved out in favour of a day with the runners. He's a brute of a russel at 17" tts, with a swelled head mentality as well. His drive is his plus side, his negative side is just being damn stupid. Might get another year out of him before he's too deaf to hear me shout rather than just ignoring me! Then its retirement, Why do i want a terrier? (anyone thats perserveered with one for many years will tell you, there is no better marker than a good terrier.) Got the first taste of the white stuff after driving through plenty of flooded roads on the way up this morning, The russel and me took a few moments behind a wall until the first blast had gone through! Did things in a traditional style today. On foot as i was on my own. As i had the terrier i'd be netting up. (Been nearly 10 month since he caught anything!) As i'd be netting up, i'd not want to dig. (The nets were on so i took a pair of jills out). First warren the terrier showed me i'd missed a couple of escape route's. Cheers dog. Me missing a few holes netting up seemed to be a common theme today. On two warrens four rabbits escaped through a sly tunnel. I am the weakest link. Just the odd ones to start with from the warrens, but as i moved along, got into a few holes that looked promising. Plenty of bolting going on with the jills, but then the spade got a look in. Whens it my turn? With the white stuff down, the going was tricky, struggling to stand up on some bits. Wish i had four legs sometimes. The dog kept dissapearing, only to find him over the next ridge marking up. Got a mark on this, the dog did his own thing until i called him back, at near 3pm its not worth having a dog down. Got caught up in another snow storm on the way off. enough is enough, ended up with a decent tally after a hard day out. No more snow pleeease. Edited December 1, 2009 by Brimmer Quote Link to post
John-B 4
Nice one Brimmer, snow here on the high ground so i'm guessing our permissions will be about 2 foot deep LOL. Did the old man not feel up for it today or did he have a sneak peek at the weather forecast??? I'm dying to get out but SKY have got me working 7 days a week, usually it dies down after christmas so will make up for it then, If you're after a new dog I have one here, his name is Bouncer and he's geting worse every day i think he's got alzhiemers (sp) he really is losing the plot. Well done for getting out in the elements though, just think of me in a sleet/snow storm 30 foot up a ladder clinging on for dear life just to fit some buggers HD for crimbo and you will feel warm inside Quote Link to post
netfull 0
Hi Brimmer, Excellent post and some great photo's,I've justed entered a post "The voice of experience"and in it I Question how anyone can ferret without a dog? with your experience and in my case also, a dog complements the team and becomes a vital team member,no more putting nets on empty warrens! Netfull. Quote Link to post

Send our best wishes for your father mate I did have holidays booked to get out but somebody decided to have a stroke LOL From november until January we aren't allowed any holidays as the rota is suspended. I'm gonna try and get up on the permissions on my single days off just to get familiarised with the lay of the land, probably with no ferrets or gun so I can have a proper mooch, "MIGHT" just "MIGHT" take Bouncer to see if he can sniff out any sets in the woodland on the higher ground but I don't think I could cope with taking him ferreting again after his carry on the last time. My next full days off aren't until the 20th and 21st december then in january I have plenty of days off but they are all midweek. Will just have to see how it goes. Quote Link to post

welsh terrier 10
good day out , you should retire him ,you know the old saying (you cant teach a old dog new tricks) Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
Snow! you lucky lad, and you'll miss that pain in the arse dog when he's gone Very true Stealthy. Me old feller asked me only last week if i'd get another terrier. I told him i'd never be without one. Fair play there hard work. At the end of the day any decent terrier could still bag a decent tally of rabbits alongside the right outfit, even on three legs! (sometimes even the best runners are out of action.) I think the thing about terriers, and more so with JRT's is the look they give you when you bollock them, because you know deep down they dont give a s**t, its just part of owning one And the runner, She's doing well mate thanks, she just cant get enough, and that suits me:thumbs: Quote Link to post
