Falconry dogs

Recommended Posts

Hi all, would like some info on if a weimaraner would be suitable for falconry and possibly marking rabbit holes? I know that a lurcher would be more suited but I would prefer a weimaraner as I see a lot of them used for falconry. The plan is for to come with me to work every other day and to be kept in a shed at night that is 6ft squared. The shed would be shared with a harris hawk. Can anyone give mwe any corrections to my post, as I have only ever kept a german shepherd. Any advice would be brilliant.

As Already said, Not a good idea to kennel the dog with the bird. kennel the dog seperatly in view of the bird. When ever you take the bird out for a walk on the fist, take the dog as well. This way way the bird will get used to seeing the dog all the time and come to regard it as a member of the team. I would advise that you go for either a German wirehaired pointer or a Wirehaired Hungarian visla. They are not as 'hot headed' as a weimaraner. If you have never trained a gundog or an hpr I strongly recomend that you go and get proper instruction in training one.Hope this helps!

Cheers eskdale hawks, I do like the wire haired look. I didnt actually mean that the dog would be in the aviary but in the same compound, just thought so it would get used to the dog. And farlap unless you have any constructive help dont reply cheers 8)
