jeffers 3
took the ferrets out this morning to give the dog a run. on his last run i heard him yelp and he came back limping on his back leg. didnt see what he had done as i was digging at the time.i thought he had cramp because after a rub he seemed o.k.i called it a day and went home, jack didnt limp but seemed a bit stiff. checked him out when i got home and noticed he was really sore and swollen on his hip.not sure what the muscle is called but it looks like a glutiuse?any advise on treatment. had a cold pack on it this morning, and put tiger balm on it tonight.i was thinking of putting radiol on it tomorrow.how long should he be rested or do i see how the swelling goes? skycat 6,174
Ice pack is the right thing to do, then massage: I'd use something like Weleda Arnica Massage Lotion or a good spirit embrocation though it is really the act of massaging that helps bring blood to the area and relax the muscle fibres and break down any tightness. Beware of massaging too hard though: if you don't know what your'e doing you can do more harm than good. Firmish rubbing with the flat of the hand. Keep dog on lead for at least a week if the muscle is just pulled and sore, but if its actually torn then 3 weeks on lead: difficult to tell whether torn or pulled unless you are an expert and see these sorts of injury all the time. drobida 0
I have a 7 yr old foxhound that has developed an enlarged shoulder muscle on his right side only. No pain, stiffness, discomfort. This seems to be permanet. Can anybody give me a clue as to what is going on? Thanks darrylrobida@yahoo.com
skycat 6,174
Could be that the muscle has ruptured (torn away from where it attaches to the bone) either the muscle itself is ruptured or the tendon which fixes it to the bone has been ripped away: dogs turning hard when running, either unfit or on very bad bumpy ground can do this. Without seeing it in the flesh hard to know exactly what has happened: either way, gentle rubbing with the palm of your hand and a good embrocation will help it to heal but it could be f*cked anyway, not so that the dog can't run, but he might be unable to turn properly. We've got a 7 year old dog here with a ruptured triceps: he's OK to run in a straight line but has trouble turning tightly.
