A Good Night

Recommended Posts

Tonight my dog caught and retrieved his first rabbit! but wouldn't give up his prise! I ignored this and let him carry it for a while then took it off him gave him a treat for giving it up then gave it back to him to carry a bit more and when he put it down i picked it up and bagged it although he wanted it back! Did i do right or should i of handled it differently? and is it something he will grow out of or do i need to be more forceful? As i don't want to put him off retrieving!

thats a difficult one,,,,

if he caught it brought to u ,,,,but he wanted to carry it,,,,,walking along side u ?????,,,,,,,if thats so the novelty for him will wear off,,when he,s hunting more and there more to be had,,,,,,aleast he,s retriving to u!!!!!!! ( i,e maybe not to hand but aleast he aint running off,)

i think uve done the right thing by not making a big deal about it,,,and let him carry it for awhile,,,,,aleast ur not giving him in to trouble for carrying his catch

maybe more practice in feild with dummy or dead game ,,,and praise him for retriving to hand and treats,,,,but it sounds like its just one last hurdle to overcome,,,and ur dog,s there

hi mate,

ok he caught it and brung it back if it was to hand brill if not its good enough, congrats to you, the training you have spent time on has worked :clapper: now when my young dogs wont give it up i take hold of the rabbit, they get a stern "leave it" dont have to shout just be very very firm, if they still wont then a little hard slap to the muzzle does the trick at the same time you say "leave it" ,as for giving it back to carry why did you do that?? cause to me thats like saying here you are it yours only then your taking it off him again it is teasing him, i think if you want him to carry something giv him a dummy, just remember the dog caught it, you dispatch and bag it, you aint got time to piss about cause You have to kill it or its cruel to the bunny ;) get it in the bag, dog gets a good petting and off you go for another run from start to finish should be done in under a minute hence the reason my dogs get into dble figures almost every night i go out, dont believe me then you more than welcome to come for a look out with me...atvb daks :)
