Ratkiller 0
Hello everyone, I have never ferreted before (although I have heard of it), and was wondering what a beginner should do. Is it best to buy a baby ferret or a full grown one? Do you have to train the ferrets at all or do they just flush things out instinctively? Also, I am a yank (proudly too lol ) and was wondering what kind of game do most of you hunt with your ferrets? I see alot of rabbits, but here in America the rabbits don't live in dens like they do over there? What do any of you think about using ferrets to flush larger animals out of dens such as muskrats, mink, raccoons, and foxes? Or do you think that these are probably too big and too much for a ferret? Just wanted to know your thoughts on this, thanks Quote Link to post
watson 1
if you want your ferret back then i wouldnt try flush a fox!! thats a terriers job Quote Link to post
polecat93 4
no i wouldnt use them for a fox purposly or mink either or any of the ohter animals you said i think the only thing you should mainly use ferrets for are rabbits and if needed rats, getting a baby ferret is probably better because they get to know you and also they maybe more likely to come to you in the field , most ferrets would instinctively go for rabbits depending on if theyve been bread for that reason if they have just been bread for pets they may not be interested in rabbits. shotgunandy 2
not sure if its right or not mate but i got relatives in the states and they have told me on several occasions that it is illegal to hunt with ferrets in the US. (it is illegal even to own them in alaska). as for anything along the lines of foxes or mink, get a dog, ferrets are not big or powerful enough to handle themselves against such animals and will not last 5 minutes Quote Link to post
waidmann 105
ferrets are best for rabbit. rats bite back too. as for raccoon and fox don't try it. ferrets are illegal in some areas of the us ( according to the internet ) Quote Link to post
