Deker 3,491
Out yesterday afternoon after the deer when about 17.30 the phone goes, dear old lady I have known for years and help out a bit. "Hi Deker, the fox is back, took one of my hens yesterday and is in the garden now....he comes up from the lake end of the garden" So I said I would try and get over this afternoon! Now... this site is not enormous, only about 17 acres (her garden) but she used to keep 3 horses as well, one had to be put down last year and the other two sold as she found them too hard work (she's well into her 's) and husband had a stroke earlier this year so needs a lot of attention..... Road on one side, public footpath on another and Bridleway on another side, on top of which the route Charlie takes into the estate leaves the sun right in my face, and without the horses the grass has got really long, fortunately she gets on really well with the adjoining farmer and earlier this year he cut her fields and cleared the ditches, even more fortunately she tells me he has just had his sheep on her land which have done another great job on the grass!! This is not a site for the centrefire so I took the .22WMR, I know the longest safe shot I can get on Charlies route in is 120 yards but I usually get him a bit closer. So arrive about 16.30, have a general mooch around to check nothing has changed and set up shop behind a ranch style chunky fence right next to the stable block, lots of foliage cover in front of me, good firm support on the fence and 120 yards of clear shooting on the route he takes...problem was the sun, and it was doing my head, fortunately the cloud came over but no sign of Charlie, put the lamping kit on the gun and Charlie turned up, it was 17.45 and plenty of daylight to take him with! Watched him steadily get closer, then something spooked him about 70 yards out (it wasn't me), he froze looked to his left and it seemed he was going to give it legs ...so the .22WMR was sent to do it's business, job done! Another will be back, they always find this place, she loves to keep a few chickens, so I'll just wait for the next phone call. Picture taken in the stable block with the WMR! Quote Link to post
