split toenail

Just got back from a week away, and the corn has been cut on the estate behind my place. Went to walk the dogs, just on the footpaths, and a hare got up, like they do! My bitch was off like a shot, got on terms with it well, struck, stumbled, and split her toenail idown the middle.Fing typical! What does everyone do for a split nail, i need it to heal well and before september.

cheers primadonna, yes it has shelled(didnt know it was called that, but a good description of what has happened) Bleeding was minimal, and i puffed wound powder on it. clipped a lot of the nail away, the toe itself is ok. Fingers crossed.

A nail wound is quite painfull ,and could take some time to heal ,so allow the dog to rest off the toe ,and no running for a while.

i can strongly recommend the alu spray for toe injuries. it creates a flexible barrier to infection for the nail to heal.i flush with saline and then use the cut heal spary and cover with alu spray.

what is the alu spray?

it is a aerosol spray for treating wounds it contains aluminiumwhich stops the growth of bacteria and hence in fection. it dries almost instantly and keeps everything dirt free. ALMICIN i think is the brand name.

Is there any diet supplements that can be used to stop this hapening as my dog has great feet but his nails peel quit easily?? wondered if hes missing something from his diet

do you use jayes fluid?????i had a similar problem years ago when i used jayes fluid in the dog pen,they were always knocking nails off,i only use it once a week now

Been told calcified seaweed is good for nail strength. Off to get some.

no he's a house dog althought the guy who had him before me might of done but that was over 3 months ago.

 

His nails are really short!!! how long should they be! his are about 10-12mm
