Wild_and_Irish 11
Don't shoot me down for asking but why are gundogs never used in the make up of lurchers? I know a lurcher is supposed to be bred from a cur or a terrier to a sighthound but IN THEORY gundogs could bring brains, soft mouths, nose and retrieving instinct. I'm just curious as to why it's never really done, if anyone has any pictures or stories of gundog crosses I'd like to see them. ATB W&I Quote Link to post

I had that very cross 20 years ago mate, it was a fairly useful dog took to water like a duck, and caught plenty of feathered game, strange thing was it had a bite like a great white, it was the hardest mouthed dog i ever owned. I gave it to my mate who really bonded with it, and it turned out to be a real charlie killer, just shows when breeding theres no surefire way of knowing what you may get. Quote Link to post

Funny you should mention a lab, I had a pet lab from working lines when I was about 10 and when I was walking him 1 day I pointed him at a 3/4 grown rabbit and this was about 40yds away, the rabbit raised itself up on it's hind legs and he immediately spotted it, gave chase and came within about 5 or 6 yards before it got to the fenceline about 30yds from where it was sitting, I was amazed how close he came.
