hi all,

last night me and 2 mates camped on my permission,

well one got scared and called his mum at halfpast midnight to come get him, (cant blame him, it was cold and horrible and his imagination got the better of him and he is only 12) anyway during the day while it was light i misplaced my lockkinfe that i use for everything, i was annoyed obviously but i also thaught great i have an excuse to buy a new knife.

so i was wondering what everyone uses and and how good it is, also i want something good quality that hold an edge well for under £30.

thanks atb borntoshoot.

Have a look at the Frosts Mora Knife, I have one and I cant fault it only cost about £10 have a look at this http://www.raymears.com/Bushcraft_Product/...-Knife-Clipper/

There are better looking versions like they do one with a wood handle that is smart but costs a bit more http://www.bushcraftuk.com/index.php/778-m...mora-knife.html

the frosts are bushcraft knives are they not? with plastic handles, they do 2 colours, green and blue, my dads a scout leader and he uses one he baught it at the cla gamefair last year and i love it, i was going to get one this year but we didnt go.

i was thinking of one but thaught i might go for something more "wooden" (whats the word im looking for) like leather pouch, wooden handle that sort of thing.

If you are looking for a hunting knife for less than £30 you are spoiled for choice these days.

It surprises me how much quality stuff is available for what in real terms is very little money given the time a quality knife will last you.

(which is a lifetime in some cases).

I would be looking at a Drop point full tang hunting knife 3.5-4.5" blade, and would probably go for a stainless steel blade for convienence.

A quick scan through the latest Attleborough Accesories catalogue shows many such knives in your price range.

I would look at something along the lines of a Boker magnum Elk hunter which fits the above criteria and looks like it will last a long time.

all the best

like i said my dads a scout leader, he buys bushcraft magazine and the like and then when hes finished with them he takes them up to scouts and shows the kids how to do stuff out of there and last month they had an artical about making your own knife and we decided we might give it a go sometime.

thanks for your replies

I had this lump of wood that I cut out of the HW100 from bubbleduck and an old circular saw blade. Not one to throw things away and being able to cock up most things DIY without any help. I had this vision. After the vision had past and I was sobered up enouth to handle an angle grinder I set to work and this is how far I got so far. I had to stop because we have visitors and those silly people wnat to hear what they are saying and my grinding away on my knife to be, was considered a conversation stopper. And there was me thinking they were just dead impressed.

The basic ingredients: One circular saw blade and some ideas in my head as to what a all purpose woods craft come hunting knife should look like.

Right that blade is fecked

The raw form after a load of noise and sparks

P7050015.jpg

Jut cut the wood from the HW100 stock to a rough shape. ( I knew those HW rifles were good for something )

P7050016.jpg

Now the blade is drilled in the tang and profiled. Ready for some hardening.

Give it a go, its dirty and fun and that is a good combination for most things in life.

looks great, never thaught of making the blade aswell, how well do you think that will hold an edge though?

also how are you going to harden it? sorry if thats a stupid question but im curious.

also with the handle is the wood two pieces you are going to stick together around the blade? if so do you not think it is a bot small because you want to round the wood to a grip shape and it looks like it may be too small from your picture.

just a suggestion.

The tang goes right through the handle and is riveted with two home brew brass rivets to the tang. I have hardened it with a charcoal fire using one of those hot air guns to get it nice and hot. i then used a colour chart for the right temperature and oil to cool it of. It turned out well but now I have to finish it . Shaping the handle and polishing the blade. I'll stick a photo on here when I am done, but this is how far I got with it until now. Still only the rough shape but it will give you an idea of what its going to be like when its done.

looks good mate.

Not yet but it will once I have a bit of time to finish it of.

But I have been testing it as it is and it holds an edge very well. wanted to do that first before I put the work into making it look nice.
