Water dept for a duck pond

Recommended Posts

I am building a number of duck ponds and not sure on how deep i need them some ponds for mallard some for teal and some for wigeon.

One of the best natural ponds I have access to has some deep water(safety) but progressively getting shallower with the slope tapering. The result is a pond which has a lot of grass growing in the summertime around the edges and in the winter this grass is covered (depth from 3or 4inchesat the margins rising to the tops of wellingtons over about 20/25ft) . Mallard and teal use this one without barley feeding . Whatever you do don't dig a deep hole as an old quarry with 20 ft depth of water within 800 yards of the shallow pond is useless by comparison.

Lots of grassy margins and shallow feeding bays are good. It doesn't matter if the middle of the pond is deep. Having a good flow of water through can stop it freezing up as well.

These ponds are great for Teal and Mallard.
