Squirrel_Basher 17,102
Yesterday evening i tried a place thats a haven for deer .A meadow runs along the side of a 200 acre wood , the meadow is part of my ground.I went to the far end as there was a slight breeze and i didnt want to spoil the rest of the ground .The grass here is still long with a ride cut through it diagonally for horse riding .Positioned myself on the edge of this about 40 yards off the wood and called .Immediately there was a crashing in the wood and a doe jumped the fence .She was stood just over the fence in the meadow and looking over her shoulder back in the wood ,I heard another deer but never saw it before she decided it wasnt right and vanished from wense she came .Heard her bark way up into the hanging part of the wood and thought i may as well move now .Stalked up to the other far end ,seeing a muntie briefly as it crossed a ride in the wood .There is a group of oak trees up this end and i got sat down under one of them for a call here .Several repetitions later there was a crashing in the corn field to my left and i moved the rifle round to face .A high hedge obscures my veiw here from the corn field ,then there is a sheep fence and next a deep ditch .The crashing moved up a bit then down the hedge and was more than one deer .I gave a few peeps and the crashing stopped .I heard the fence twang and a young buck came flying through the hedge ,followed by a good mature fellow with a wide 6 pointer .The youngster ran left of me and stopped .The mature jumped back in the hedge and was gone .The spiker was obviously put out by this as he turned to face the hedge and edged his way back .I whistled quietly and he turned to face me ,the adrenaline obvious in his posture .I was on him and shot him through the neck at maybe 30 yards .Dont know whether i called both and the mature buck pulled rank or whether territory was the reason for the afray .I will never know i guess.I was happy to have seen this though and shoot the lesser of the two .
